MKE Meetups is made by Colin Wright from beautiful Riverwest, Milwaukee.

I started curating and sharing a list of Milwaukee-area meetups after starting my own little Sunday reading group back in December 2024. I met some other meetup organizers in the process, and found that getting the word out about these sorts of groups is tricky: there's a decent amount of promo for things to do after you've met people and made friends (concerts, festivals, conventions, etc), but comparably little for events where meeting new people and engaging in shared activities over time is the main purpose.

I've benefitted immensely from the meetups I've attended (and the one I run), and I wanted to share those benefits with others. Hence the MKE Meetups email, and now this page.

We're living at a moment in which the majority of our daily social interactions have moved online, into spaces that are optimized for metrics (and types of engagement) that benefit the platforms, but which often flatten and devalue our connections with other human beings.

Regular in-person socializing isn't a be-all, end-all solution to our personal and cultural ills, but it can help us feel more connected to our neighbors and communities, boost our mood and psychological stability, reduce our vulnerability to health issues and cognitive decline, and improve our overall sense of well-being; which is pretty good!

On top of that, meetups are a great way to learn new skills and make new connections (professional, social, and potentially even romantic).

This project is meant to help more people find their people, and to consequently strengthen us as both individuals and as communities.

What is MKE Meetups?

MKE Meetups is a weekly newsletter containing a human-curated list of meetup events happening across the Milwaukee area over the coming week.

It's also a website filled with Milwaukee meetups that can be explored several months into the future as a list, on a calendar, or on a map.

Who runs MKE Meetups?

Author, podcast host, and former world-traveler (now Milwaukee-native) Colin Wright.

What problem does MKE Meetups solve?

Meetups are surprisingly difficult to find (especially compared to events like concerts, sporting events, and conventions), and evidence of their existence is often scattered across a bajillion different sites and social media accounts, when they're available online in the first place.

MKE Meetups is a central location where these events, groups, clubs, and activities can live, making them more accessible and in turn helping more people find new hobbies, new friends, and new communities.

How much does MKE Meetups cost?

MKE Meetups is free for all users!

How is this project funded?

I've thus far funded MKE Meetups out-of-pocket. Though now that the project is in its second year, I'm exploring several monetization options, including non-scammy, non-data-stealing sponsorship slots, and an un-paywalled 'buy me a coffee' option (nothing locked away, but people can choose to support the project directly if they so choose).

I have no idea if either of these approaches will work, but I'm going to continue experimenting, either way.

How is a meetup distinct from other types of events?

It depends on who you ask, but according to my definition, a meetup is an event where people get together on a regular basis and engage in a shared activity.

Often there'll be opportunities (guided or latent) to exchange names and chit-chat with other attendees at these events. Think knitting circles, book clubs, and foreign language exchange get-togethers.

Meetups are not one-to-many events (like concerts or speaking events, where there's one person speaking and everyone else listening). They're also not crowd-based events (like a farmer's market or convention).

There's more than a little fuzziness in this, so I take it on a case-by-case basis. But peruse one of the weekly lists and you should get a pretty good sense of what's a meetup and what's not.

Are you actually based in Milwaukee?

Yes! I (Colin) live with my partner in beautiful Riverwest, Milwaukee.

Will you share my event?

Possibly! If it fits the above-mentioned criteria for a meetup and it's not, like, a nazi meetup or the Milwaukee wing of the 'We Like to Cook and Eat Babies' club, submit it here.
